The Fresh Department Is Still Grocery's Biggest Trust Builder
Price matters in grocery, but fresh may matter even more.
New research from the Logile, Inc. 2026 State of Fresh Grocery Shopping Report confirms something many of us in food marketing have known for years: shoppers judge the entire store brand through the lens of fresh departments: produce 🍎, bakery 🍞, and deli 🥪 . I would add the meat case as well 🥩.
A few findings stood out:
• 91% of shoppers say fresh departments influence whether they trust a grocery store.
• 84% say a poorly maintained fresh department changes their perception of the entire store.
• When comparing two equally convenient stores, 46% chose the retailer with better fresh departments, compared with 40% who chose lower prices.
Fresh isn't just a nice to have - it's a brand strategy.
For retailers that want to grow shopper trust and loyalty, I'd focus on a few fundamentals:
✅ Product quality first. Nothing else matters if the product fails.
✅ In-stock conditions. Full and abundant displays communicate freshness and operational excellence.
✅ Cleanliness. That includes cases, fixtures, and floors. Why? Shoppers notice.
✅ Lighting. Great lighting brings color to life and makes products look fresher and more appealing.
Bottom line: fresh creates a halo effect for the entire store brand. Get it right, and shoppers are more likely to see your store as their go-to destination for fresh foods.
Do you agree? What tells you a grocery store is worth coming back to?
